NICA! Politics, art and artful sights

Hero and founder of the Sandinista party, Augusto César Sandino. Painted, mounted in the park & muraled with a little Ortega superimposition.

Viewed as a fantastic victory for the Nicaraguan people (read: not just the rich folks), the Sandinista (FSLN) revolution of 1979 made social justice a closer reality. Across the country, the FSLN with victor Ortega spent over a decade seeing increased literacy, education and health care. Then, the U.S. backed contras came. They trained, they killed, they dismantled. This, even after the FSLN fought Somoza's National Guard.
Now, with Ortega back in office, public opinion is split across the country. We saw both satisfaction with Ortega's championing of indigenous groups' rights, and dismay over his (as yet) empty promises to rush economic self-sufficiency.
